Thomas R. Whisenhunt, Jr., M.D., PhD is a board certified neurosurgeon. Dr Whisenhunt is seeing new patients at Montgomery Neurosurgical Associates with Dr. Patrick Ryan. His areas of expertise focus on minimally invasive spine techniques, complex spinal surgery, as well as other aspects of neurosurgery.
A graduate of San Diego State University, Dr. Whisenhunt earned his bachelor’s degree in cellular and molecular biology. He then completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) dually earning a doctorate degree in cell biology as well as his medical degree in 2007.
Dr. Whisenhunt completed his residency in neurosurgery at UAB and was the neurosurgery chief resident from July 2012 to June 2013. During that time, he was awarded the UAB Resident Leadership Award, given for clinical excellence and leadership. In addition, he has been nationally recognized for his research.
Dr Whisenhunt grew up in Alexander City, Alabama until the age of 13. He then lived in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota, before moving to California for college. He and his wife, Emily, moved to Montgomery from Birmingham and have five children: Benjamin, Alexander, David, Nicholas and Evelyn
